As you are likely aware, every other week I have been picking a company to invest $1000 in as a part of the Let’s Be Millionaires, hail Mary investment series. What follows is an update covering the performance of these picks from January until now (this post was written April 5th, 2018).
A Rocky Start
While April 5th was a good day for the portfolio, overall performance since inception is decidedly down. The current value of all portfolio holdings at the time of writing is $6467.89. $7000 has been invested in 7 different stocks thus far meaning that this performance constitutes an unrealized loss of 7.64%. Fortunately, the key word in the prior sentence is unrealized. I intend to hold all of these picks through at least the duration of the investment series (calendar year 2018).
Winners and Losers
Currently 3 of my picks are in the positive and 4 are negative. As you can see below, the negative (losers) are much larger in magnitude than the positive (winners).
Wisdom Tree Investments (WETF) is by far the biggest loser so far, down a whopping 30%. Compare that to my biggest winner, Contango Oil and Gas (MCF) which is up 7%.
Snapchat Inc (SNAP) and iRobot corporation (IRBT) are also down fairly significantly.
The Positive Takeaway
While I am obviously not excited about my investments being in the red currently, I have to say it is a pretty great feeling to see almost $6500 in an account that did not exist a little over 3 months ago.
If you let the fear of losing money stop you from saving and investing then you truly have lost. It is very easy to have a bad investment or two and decide that you would rather just spend your money or never invest the money that you do save.
